Learning More About Bite Adjustments and Why You May Need One After a Dental Procedure
What is a bite adjustment?
A bite adjustment is when we go back in the mouth and adjust any high spots that you're feeling with your bite. You might feel like when you bite down, you're only hitting in one spot and not your entire mouth. That can be uncomfortable for the patient.
Why would I need a bite adjustment?
Sometimes bite adjustments are needed after dental work. One reason is you're typically numb when the fillings are done and can't necessarily feel how you're biting down. When we check it, we do the little tap tap tap grind.
You might not be biting in the correct spot. I always tell my patients, if you get home and that numbness wears off and you feel like you're just hitting in one area or it's just off, come back and we can do a quick adjustment for you.
What are the most common reasons people need a bite adjustment after dental work?
The most common reason that patients would need a bite adjustment after a filling or a crown is they were too numb when we initially checked it. Sometimes, as they get to chewing at home and eating, they're moving around in different ways that we weren't able to assess in the chair, and they can feel a difference and need a bite adjustment.
What are some symptoms that patients can experience if their bite is not properly aligned?
Symptoms that patients can experience if their bite is not properly aligned after work include discomfort with biting down, cold sensitivity, and some patients even experience headaches.
How is a bite adjustment procedure performed by a dentist?
The way a bite adjustment is performed is we take a polishing burr and mark with the bite paper. You'll hear that tap tap tap grind. We'll look for any high spots that are indicated, make a small adjustment gradually, and listen to how the patient is feeling.
We also look at how those bite marks are noted on the teeth to ensure that we're hitting in the proper spot.
